Situations Requiring Caution
- Thyroid conditions: Because ashwagandha may increase thyroid hormone levels, people with hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease should avoid it. People on thyroid medication (levothyroxine) should monitor their thyroid levels more closely if they choose to use ashwagandha, as the dose may need adjustment
- Autoimmune conditions: Ashwagandha may stimulate immune activity — people with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's, or other autoimmune conditions should discuss with their rheumatologist before using
- Pregnancy: Ashwagandha should be avoided during pregnancy — there is some evidence it may stimulate uterine contractions
